Урок 1
Тема: Back to school
Підтема: Nina’s travelling to House of Anubis
I'm a Ukrainian teenager and recently I have won the grandee for studying in Great Britain. Can you imagine, I'll be studying in an old English school which name is House of Anubis?! It's great, isn't it?
And I have only two days to gather my things. I don’t know what to take with me. I’m so excited that I’m afraid I can forget something. Please, help me!
So, let’s help Nina. Write down the things you need to live and study in another country. Mention all kinds of things: clothes, shoes, personal things, school things and so on.
Reading point
Look, this is a picture of my new school. Do you like it?
Here is the leaflet about House of Anubis. We can read it while I'll be flying in the plane. Oh, are you afraid of flying? I'm not, it is exciting.
Read the text. Is there anything new for you? If yes, try to understand the meaning from the context.
The normal school day in Britain is from nine o'clock to half past three. Pupils must stay at school all the time. The day starts with registration. The class teachers check who is at school and who is absent. Then there is an assembly. All the pupils come together for a religious service. The headmaster or headmistress reads out some important notices. Lessons begin after the assembly. At lunchtime some pupils go "home" for lunch, but most pupils have their lunch at school canteen. The afternoon begins with registration again. School finishes at half past three. All the time pupils stay at special houses-hostels.
- Can you compare English and Ukrainian school? What is the same and what is different?
Words and word-use
Today it is my first day at school. It is very important for me to make a good impression on my new teachers and classmates. Now I am going to help my English teacher to get the class to the lessons. So I need to stick the notes with the English words to the different things. Oh, there are so many things and even more notes. Please, will you help me?
- Read the words and choose "Classroom" ones.
bag, blackboard, cinema, museum, park, pencil, map, chalk, ruler,
office, pen, bank, book, car, brush, library, sharpener, desk, hotel, pupil,
bench, teacher, windows, rubber, bookcase, sing, famous, wall.

Tutor: Have you met somebody?
Nina: Oh, yes. I've made friends with two of my new classmates.
Tutor: That's great. Take a seat, please.
Nina: Oh, thank you.
Tutor: What are you doing this evening?
Nina: Well, I have to do a lot of studying...
Tutor: Have you got a hobby?
Nina: Oh, yes. I have. I have a cat and I like to play with it.
Tutor: That's good. I'm glad that you feel comfortable here. See you later.

Read this tongue-twister for 5 times. Try and learn it by heart.

Yesterday I wrote a letter to my mum.
But Alfey (my new friend) spoilt it a little. He wrote some words with mistakes. Help me, please, to restore it.
Dear Mum,

Laura is from Dublin. She works really hard on her English, she is really (hardwalking). Besides, Laura is rather (functual) too, as she does everything in time. Miguel, on the opposite, is a (crazybones). He doesn't like studying and prefers to (paste) time on playing computer games and surfing the Internet.
That' s all for now.
Love, Nina.

Thank a lot for your help. Do you remember my friend, Alfey? He has problems at school. Yesterday I had a chat with him. Look at it.
Alfey: Hey, Nina! How are you doing? Are you ready for our Biology lesson?
Nina: Of course, I am. I was working hard on the information the whole evening yesterday. I managed to learn all terms and to do the practical tasks in the exercise-book.
Alfey: How clever of you! You've always been a model girl. Unfortunately, I'm not as organised as you are.
Nina: Do you mean to say that you didn't do your homework?
Alfey: Frankly speaking, I did something at the last minute, but not half enough.
Nina: Typical, just typical! I bet, you wasted your time again! What a lazybones are you!
Alfey: Not at all. I was helping Betty (our housekeeper) in the kitchen from 5 to 7 and got really tired. So I wanted to relax. I was playing "The Happy Farmer" the rest of the evening and then fell asleep.
Nina: That won't do! You are so disorganised. You should plan your time ahead. You don't want to make a mess of your life, do you?
Alfey: True, true. I often have problems with my time management. I never come bang on time.
Nina: Never say die! Try a little harder.
Alfey: I'll try. Thank's.
- And now, can you make some recommendations for Alfey to improve his time management? Please, write an example of student's time- table to manage to do everything (work and rest).
