Good afternoon, dear friends! I’m glad to greet you here. We’ve met today to show ourselves, to learn some new and interesting methods of learning that we can use after returning home, to exchange the experience we’ve got.

In our life there are some situations when we turn to the experience of the famous people to find support and strength. I’d like to turn to the famous American steel magnate Charles Schwab. He said that his smile cost millions of dollars. Maybe he was right as his individuality, charm and ability to be loved by people were the bases of all his successful achievements. And one of his marvelous peculiarities was his captivating (charming) smile.

“Do you want to impress people? SMILE!” said Dale Carnegie.

You know that smile can be different: it can be open-hearted, it can be insincere, like a grin, it can be uncertain. In some way, it depends on our feelings. And now think about your emotions, your mood and your feelings at that very moment. On the table you have three kinds of smiling faces. Choose one for yourselves and stick it to the flower in the right corner.  You have 30 seconds for it. Go.

I hope that smiles you’ve chosen show that you are happy. If not, let’s try and change the situation.

So, let’s start! All of you know that English is unusual school subject. Most subjects like Physics, Biology, History and some others give the theoretical knowledge that helps our students to understand the world. But only English gives such knowledge that helps them to live in the world. According to the State Standards, English is considered not as a subject to be taught but as a mean for communicating.

To solve this task, I mean to teach to communicate in the real life, we must form and develop so called language competences: phonetic skills, lexical skills and grammatical skills, as well as communicative competences: reading, listening, speaking and writing.

Each competence has its own peculiarities, its own stages and methods of teaching. And today I’m going to share with you some techniques which I use while developing all these competences. I hope that you’ll find them useful.

So, we’ll start with Language Competences.

Warming up activity

  • Numbers

Numbers play a great role in our life. We all have a lot of numbers connected to us. Let's play a guess game. I will write down 4 numbers on the blackboard, your task is to guess what they mean for me.

Phonetic Skills

To develop or improve children’s pronunciation we can use the next tasks:

*    Tongue-twisters

When children hear about tongue-twisters for the first time, they are shocked a little bit. But later it becomes like a game: Who is the best? (especially when you ask them to tell it three times). There are lots of tongue-twisters, but there is one my children love most of all.

Whatever one toucan can do

Is sooner done by toucans two

And three toucans (it’s really true)

Can do much more than two can do.

Of course, when we represent this twister to the children, for the first time we read it sentence by sentence with them slowly. And then we give them an opportunity to read it quickly. Let’s try.

  • Teachers are trying to read tongue-twister in chain.

Well done. You see, even if their pronunciation won’t be great (at first), but there will be one point that will help to relax and to soften the atmosphere a little bit. They will smile and laugh because all of them for the first time will make mistakes. It’s normal. But it gives for the weaker students an opportunity not to feel awkward.

Lexical skills

May be I will say an unpleasant thing, but modern children don’t like to learn words by heart. They understand that without this knowledge they won’t be able to express their ideas properly, but it’s still a big problem.

To solve this problem we can use games. I suggest you to get acquainted with two games pupils like the most.

*    “Catcher”

Let’s see how it works. On the table you have the sheets with words connected with professions. I will tell one word after another, your task is to hear it, find it on the table and “catch” it earlier than your contestants. Don’t be polite but, please, do NOT hurt each other.

Actor, barber, journalist, lawyer, doctor, librarian, biologist, miner, nurse, driver, writer, scientist, pilot, artist, builder, gardener, editor, cashier, chemist, fireman, singer, postman, plumber, bricklayer, engineer, farmer, employee, maid, economist, typist.

And let’s see who has the biggest number of words. So, you are the winner. In such a way we make our students listen carefully, watch attentively at the words and choose quickly. And even the weak and shy student can be the winner in this game.

As you understand, you can use words connected to any theme: shopping, food, clothes and so on.

                 *   "Bankrupt"

On the blackboard we stick some cards. On the front side of the cards you can see words. On the back side – there is money (for example: $ 2, $ 10, $ 50 and so on). Some cards have the word “bankrupt” (it means that children will lose all their money they’ve gained). Some cards have the word “donation” (it means that their money will be divided between the teams – contestants).

The task for the children can be different (it depends on the pupils’ age and your aims):

  • To spell the word
  • To translate it
  • To make a word combination with it
  • To make the sentence

Let’s try to play. Your task is just to translate the words into Ukrainian.

Competition, windsurfing, horse racing, chess, scuba diving, skiing, swimming, boxing, car racing, cycling, ballooning, camping, rafting, martial arts, skating, jogging, weight lifting, gymnastics.

Grammatical skills

As for the grammar, the biggest problem pupils are facing is the word order. To cope with it we do such task as the “Broken sentence”. We take the sentences, cut them into some parts and we mix these parts. Children’s task is to restore the sentences. The quickest one gets high point.

Let’s do it and see what team will be the first – the quickest.

  • The young lady was standing near the window.
  • He was reading the newspaper article, when she entered the room and called him.
  • Why did you choose the profession of a teacher?

And now we are going to work with Communicative Competences.

  • Reading

All of you know that there are different types of reading depending on the aim. We can speak about scanning, intensive reading, receptive reading, skimming and so on. While working with the material for Reading we use different techniques and solve different tasks.  I want to offer you the next ones.

*    “Wild Wind”

On the board you write a sentence without vowels. Pupils have to restore the sentence adding the vowel letters.

Maybe the most difficult and the most important task for the teacher is to teach the pupils to speak or to communicate. While teaching speaking we overcome children’s fears to make mistakes, to say something wro.ng and not correctly. To cope with these fears I use the task “Bees house”. This method is devoted to dialogues. It takes much time but it’s worth of being used. Let’s see how it works.

  • Speaking
  • Good morning, mother.
  • Good morning, dear.
  • How are you?
  • I’m fine. And you?

Step 1. Read together.

Step 2. Leave only the first letter of the word.

Step 3. Remove the letters, leave the space. But all the time all students together repeat the dialogue.

Step 4. Stand in two lines. One line doesn’t move. Another one is changing. Start and end the dialogue on teacher’s signal (clap)

Step 5. Change the roles of the lines.

Step 6. Game “The Clock”. One person stands in the middle. Others form the circle like the clock. The teacher says: “It is 2 o’clock”. The person who is standing as the number “2” is speaking with the person in the middle. Then they can change.

During this task each pupil repeats the dialogue so many times, that to the end even the weak children know what to say. While doing this task they help each other, and stronger pupils perform in the role of teachers.

  • Motivating

To motivate the students, I used to show some video connected to the topic. Due to this video you can lead in the topic, ask them (students) to guess the theme of the lesson and so on.

  • Summing up

To sum up the theme we use such technique as "Cinquaine". It is a kind of a poem. It has 5 lines.

1. a noun (theme)

2. two adjectives (connected to the theme)

3. three verbs

4. a sentence of 4 words (about the theme)

5. a noun (another word for the theme)

Let's see an example:

1. Family

2. Loving, friendly

3. Support, care, love

4. It gives us warmth.

5. A nest

(Steve Jobs’ photo).

At the very beginning I’ve told you that sometimes we turn to the famous people experience for the support. I hope you know this person. Do you know that while studying at school Steve was one of the worst pupils? He didn’t want to learn at all, he considered it as “a boring process”. But after moving to another city he went to “a new” school, where one teacher managed to change his views and his life. So when he was only 21, he founded the Apple Corp., and at the age of 24 he got his first million of dollars. He said “We are here to make the contribution in that world. Otherwise why do they need us to be here?

I hope that I’ve made the contribution to your teaching experience and you will use techniques represented here.
