Do you remember that in October there is the most important holiday - Teacher's Day?

Did you congratulate your teachers?

The 26th of September - European day of languages.

Did you know that...

The European Day of Languages has been celebrated every year since 2001 on 26 September.
The aim of the day is to encourage people to learn more languages, at any age, in and out of school.
There are between 6000 an 7000 languages in the world - spoken by 7 billion people divided into 189 independent states.
Although most of the world's languages are spoken in Asia and Africa, and China and India are the most populated countries in the world, English is still the most widely spoken language in the world.
There are about 225 indigenous languages in Europe - about 3% of the world's total.
languages are related to each other like the members of the family. Most European languages belong to the large Indo-European family.
Most European languages belong to three broad groups: Germanic, Romance and Slavic.
Ukrainian belongs to the Slavic language group along with Russian, Belarusian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Slovenian, Serbian, Croatian, Macedonian, Bulgarian and others.
Most European languages use the Latin alphabet. Some Slavic languages use the Cyrillic alphabet.
Ukrainian became the official state language of Ukraine in 1989.

It is the international holiday. All over the world, people take care about the Earth.

Easter is a spring holiday. It is a festival of new life. It is full of customs, traditional food and spring flowers like daffodils.

Easter isn't on the same date each year. It is on the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. This year it is on the 12th of April.

In Britain, Easter starts on Good Friday. Hot cross buns are typical cakes that people eat on this day. They are likes bread rolls with spices and raisins and they always have a cross shape on top.

For most British children, Easter means chocolate Easter eggs. They eat them on Easter Sunday. The shops are full of bright Easter decorations with chicks, rabbits and flowers.

At home, people paint and decorate chickens' eggs. They put them in baskets and give them as presents. Some families hide the eggs and the children look for them. This is called an "Easter egg hunt". Sometimes children take part in an egg race. They take spoon, put eggs in them and run. The child who finishes first and doesn't drop the egg wins.

Anyway, it is a holiday of joy and happiness. So, HAPPY EASTER to YOU!!!

The False Friends

False Friends are pairs of words or phrases in two languages or dialects that look or sound similar, but have an absolutely different meaning.

For example, the Ukrainian декада and the English decade, which means ten years (not ten days). There quite a few words like this so it is useful to know the difference and use them correctly. Have a look at the False Friends Quiz (Test Page) and choose one correct answer.

21st of February is International Mother Language Day

The 21st of February is International Mother Language Day.

International Mother Language day has been celebrated every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

On International Mother Language Day the UN's Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and UN agencies participate in events that encourage people to maintain their knowledge of their mother language while learning and using more than one language.

Governments and non-governmental organizations may use the day to announce policies to encourage language learning and support.

14th of February - Valentine's day
